Reverse cycle air conditioning is already the gold standard in home heating and cooling. These systems offer superior thermal comfort, lower running costs, and benefits for your health and the wellbeing of the environment.

Thanks to the Home Heating and Cooling Upgrades Program from the Victorian Government, eligible households can benefit even more from reverse cycle air conditioning. This program offers $1000+ in rebates for owner-occupied and rental properties that meet the eligibility criteria!

Designed to assist vulnerable and low-income households, this program can provide you with the best climate control on the market for less!

At Australian Climate Systems, we are approved suppliers and installers for the Home Heating and Cooling Upgrades Program. Licensed by the Victorian Building Authority and Energy Safe Victoria, we can help you replace your old heater, install a reverse cycle air conditioner, and claim the Government rebate.

Read on for more information about the Home Heating and Cooling Upgrades Program and the benefits of an energy-efficient reverse cycle air conditioner.

Am I Eligible for the Reverse Cycle Air Conditioner Rebate and How Much Money Can I Get?

The Home Heating and Cooling Upgrades Program applies to low income and vulnerable families who are homeowners, as well as rental providers and those who are living in rental properties.

The eligibility criteria vary slightly for homeowners and renters, but the rebates available are the same.

Eligibility for an Owner-Occupied Household

Upgrade your old heater to a reverse cycle air conditioner and get cashback!

To be eligible for rebates, homeowners must replace their existing system with an approved reverse cycle air conditioner. The system must be supplied and installed by an approved team (such as the experts at Australian Climate Systems).

Any of the following systems can be replaced with an approved reverse cycle air conditioner:

  • gas heater
  • fixed electric heater
  • wood heater
  • reverse cycle air conditioner that is more than 7 years old
  • Victorian households with no existing heating are also eligible
  • Owner-occupiers must also hold an approved concession card or have a combined household income of less than $90,000.

    Eligibility for Rental Properties

Rental property owners must replace the same gas or electric heaters mentioned above with approved reverse cycle air conditioners provided by an authorised supplier.

Additional eligibility criteria for rental properties include:

  • Evidence that the rental property earns less than $500 a week or is unoccupied with the potential to earn less than $500 a week

  • OR

  • Evidence that the rental property is occupied by renters with a valid concession card or a combined household income of less than $90,000.
  • Rental property owners must also make a declaration that the property is not used as holiday accommodation.

Rental providers – and not renters – must arrange to purchase and install the reverse cycle air conditioning.

How Much Money Can I Get in Rebates?

Both owner-occupied and rental properties are eligible for the same rebates under the program.

The money you can receive includes:

  • A $1000 rebate to contribute to the cost of your new air conditioner
  • An additional $200 if your outdated gas heater needs to be decommissioned
  • A further $500 if your switchboard needs to be upgraded as part of the installation
  • That’s a total of $1700 to contribute to the installation of a brand-new energy-efficient reverse cycle air conditioning system!

According to the Victorian Government, $1700 is the average cost to supply and install a reverse cycle air conditioner, meaning the majority of your costs will be covered!

Other Things to Consider with The Home Heating and Cooling Upgrades Program

If you want to upgrade to a reverse cycle air conditioner through the Victorian Government’s program, there are a few other criteria to consider.

For example, you must apply and confirm your eligibility before buying and installing a system. You cannot retrospectively receive the rebates, so it’s important to apply first.

All relevant compliance certificates must be supplied with reverse cycle air conditioner installations. Additionally, the system must be installed in the main living room (unless medical requirements mean it needs to be installed elsewhere).

Systems that need to be decommissioned are fixed gas heaters and older reverse cycle systems. These systems must be dismantled or made completely inoperative. To help you meet decommissioning requirements, a $200 rebate is available to assist with dismantling costs (as mentioned above).

Systems such as gas ducted heaters and wood heaters do not need to be decommissioned. However, it is recommended that you use your new reverse cycle system instead, as it will provide more energy-efficient, eco-friendly heating as well as doubling as an air conditioner.

If you need to upgrade your switchboard, our team can advise you on this when you choose us for your system changeover and upgrade.

As well as homes and rental properties, not-for-profit community housing is also eligible for The Home Heating and Cooling Upgrades Program.

What Are the Main Advantages of Reverse Cycle Air Conditioners? (and how do they work?)

Reverse cycle air conditioners are the cheapest way to heat and cool your home. Using a combination of timers, thermostat controls, and zoning, you can enjoy optimal energy efficiency and cost savings, as well as a range of environmental benefits!

How it works: Reverse cycle split system air conditioners utilise an indoor unit and an outdoor unit that are connected by a series of pipes. Offering electrically powered heating and cooling, these systems utilise heat pumps.

In heating mode, these pumps absorb the heat in outdoor air and distribute it inside your home. In cooling mode, they absorb indoor air, remove the heat, and distribute cool air around the home.

If you’re still not convinced, here are some other benefits of replacing your old inefficient heating with a brand new reverse cycle air conditioner.

    One Installation, Two Systems

Reverse cycle air conditioners offer both heating and cooling, meaning you only need to pay for one set of installation costs to get both functions. With the press of a button, you can swap between the heating function and cooling function. In Melbourne, we wouldn’t be surprised if you used both functions in one day!

Instead of installing a separate heater and cooler, opt for reverse cycle technology and get one set of costs and a one-time installation process!

    Unrivalled Efficiency and Eco-Friendly Design

There’s a reason the Victorian Government is recommending reverse cycle air conditioning. With a reverse cycle split system, you can enjoy the most efficient heating and cooling, as well as excellent environmental credentials.

When used correctly, these energy-efficient systems result in lower energy costs, less electricity consumed, and fewer emissions in the environment.

Reverse cycle technology is getting better all the time, so even if you have an older reverse cycle system, upgrading can be highly beneficial. When you’re looking at the list of approved products, look for a system with more stars for the best energy efficiency and lower running costs.

    The Power of Inverter Technology

Modern reverse cycle air conditioners utilise inverter technology. This allows your system to activate quickly yet gradually. This means your system will reach the desired temperature in no time, whether it’s in heating or cooling mode. This will happen while using the least amount of energy possible.

The inverter technology then keeps the system at the desired temperature without massive fluctuations. This consistency creates the utmost comfort while keeping your energy bills low.

Cleaner Air for Health and Wellbeing

Most modern reverse cycle air conditioning systems also include air purifying technology that removes bacteria, viruses, odours, and other particles from your indoor space. This feature is great for everyone, especially those suffering from seasonal allergies or dust sensitivities.

    Spectacular Thermal Comfort

With thermostat-controlled heating and cooling, minimal temperature fluctuations, and the cleanest indoor air, a reverse cycle air conditioner will leave you feeling comfortable every day of the year.

These systems are also quieter than many older heaters and coolers, meaning your comfort extends to the ambience and atmosphere of your home.
