Ormond has a character that makes heating and cooling decisions more complicated than simply choosing a system based on square footage. The suburb retains many inter-war homes, including Californian bungalows, Spanish Mission and Arts and Crafts properties, alongside villa units, walk-up flats and renovated residences. Some of the earliest surviving buildings date from the 1880s, while much of the suburb’s established character developed during the inter-war period.
That means two houses of a similar size can have very different heating and cooling requirements. Ceiling height, insulation, glazing, extensions and the original layout all affect how quickly a property gains or loses heat.
Older homes can be particularly demanding in winter. High ceilings, timber floors, older windows and gaps around doors can allow heated air to escape, leaving occupants tempted to keep increasing the thermostat.
Ducted heating can suit larger houses where several rooms need to be heated, but older installations should be assessed before assuming the heater itself is at fault. Ductwork can deteriorate, connections can leak, and zone controls can stop working correctly. A restricted filter or failing fan can also reduce airflow enough to make distant bedrooms noticeably colder.
For smaller properties, villa units or households that mainly occupy one or two rooms, a reverse-cycle split system may provide more efficient targeted heating. There is little benefit in heating an entire house when much of it is unoccupied.
Ormond’s established homes can also present cooling challenges. Large north- or west-facing windows, dark roof spaces and extensions with open-plan living areas can create substantial afternoon heat loads.
When considering air conditioning for Ormond homes, system capacity should be based on the rooms being conditioned, their orientation, insulation and glazing rather than simply choosing the largest available unit. An oversized system is not automatically more efficient, while an undersized unit may run continuously during hot weather.
Split systems can work particularly well for individual living areas, bedrooms or additions where whole-house ductwork would be excessive. Refrigerated cooling is useful where precise temperature control is important, while evaporative cooling can suit some detached homes where fresh-air cooling and adequate airflow are appropriate.
)
Uneven temperatures, weak airflow, unusual noises, water leaks, repeated shutdowns, or a noticeable increase in running costs are all reasons to investigate the equipment.
An effective inspection looks beyond the appliance. Filters, fans, electrical components, thermostats, drainage and refrigeration components should be checked where relevant, along with ductwork and airflow. This establishes whether the problem is actually inside the unit or somewhere in the way heating or cooling is being distributed.
A relatively new system with an isolated component failure may be worth repairing. If an older unit has repeated breakdowns, deteriorating major components or poor efficiency, replacement can make better financial sense than continually repairing individual faults.

I must say that Australian Climate systems sales who came to us was the most knowledgeable and he strongly recommended that we have the air return grille changed as per standard which the previous sales who came to my mum's premise didn't mention at all. Their installation worker came on schedule and worked with high efficiency. Satisfied customer.”
